How can you tell if your child may benefit from Speech Therapy?

Signs Your Child May Need Speech Therapy

Every child develops at their own pace, but some may need extra support to reach their full potential. Here are some common signs that could indicate your child would benefit from working with a Speech Therapist:

1. Difficulty Being Understood
If your child’s speech is hard to understand, even to close family members, it could signal a speech sound delay or disorder.

2. Limited Vocabulary for Their Age
By age two, children typically use 50 or more words and combine them into simple phrases like “Mama go”. If your child has a smaller vocabulary or isn’t putting words together, they might need help building their language skills.

3. Trouble Following Directions
As parents, you know that sometimes children will choose not to do what you’ve asked. However, some children may have difficulty understanding or following instructions. If your child struggles to understand language and follow directions, they might benefit from support in improving their receptive language (understanding of language).

4. Stuttering or Speech Fluency Issues
Frequent repetitions (e.g., “P-p-p-p-panania”), prolongations (e.g., “Pannnnnnania”), or blockage of sounds (e.g., “P--------anania”) can be a sign of a fluency disorder, which can impact confidence and communication.

5. Reading Difficulties
Struggling to recognise letters, connect sounds to letters, or understand what they read can be a sign of difficulties with phonological awareness and language comprehension, which are crucial for literacy development.

6. Social Communication Challenges
Some children may struggle to understand social cues, take turns in conversation, or build relationships with peers. These challenges might indicate the need for neurodiversity affirming support in social communication skills.
