Balancing Screen Time: Tips for Parents

Friday, January 3, 2025

Managing your child’s screen time can be tricky in today’s digital world. And let’s face it- sometimes you just need 30 minutes to make dinner by yourself! However, not all screen time is created equal. The best kind of screen time is when you join your child, making it an interactive and engaging experience.

When you watch or play with your child during screen time, you can respond to them in ways that a TV show or app cannot. For example, imagine a character on a show asks, “What is this?” while pointing to an orange. If your child says, “apple,” the character might say, “That’s right!” even though the answer is incorrect. But if you’re watching with your child, you can step in and provide helpful feedback. You might say, “Great try! Let’s look closer. Apples aren’t usually that colour, and they’re smooth. This fruit is bumpy and has a peel. I think it’s an orange!” This type of interaction not only helps your child learn but also improves their critical thinking and communication skills.

Interactive screen time also strengthens your bond with your child. When you take part in their screen time, you stay connected to their interests and can share quality moments together.

In addition to co-viewing, here are some tips for setting healthy screen time habits:

1. Create Clear Limits: Decide on screen time rules that work for your family, like setting specific times of day for screens or choosing days to go screen-free.

2. Be a Role Model: Children learn by watching you. Show them that you value offline activities, such as reading, going for walks, or doing hobbies together.

3. Offer Alternatives: Provide fun, non-screen activities that encourage creativity and movement, like drawing, building with blocks, or playing outside.

4. Use High-Quality Content: Choose educational and age-appropriate programs or apps that encourage learning and creativity. Look for options that promote interaction, such as problem-solving games or shows that spark conversations.

Balancing screen time doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By participating in your child’s screen time and setting healthy boundaries, you can make it a positive experience that supports their growth and strengthens your relationship.
